Think about the next dart

In standard double-out 501, your final dart must be a double (or inner bull) that takes the score to exactly zero. For example, 40 remaining can be finished on double 20.

  • 40 left → D20.
  • 32 left → D16.
  • 16 left → D8.
  • 8 left → D4.

Build a preferred finishing route

Many players like leaving 32 or 40 because the remaining number has simple options if one dart lands in the adjacent single. Choose a route you can calculate and throw with confidence.

Practice under light pressure

Give yourself a fixed number of darts to finish 40, 32, 24 and 16. Record success rates by starting total so you can see whether your practice pays off.

  • Always verify the current match’s double-out or other finish requirement.
  • Call your intended target only when required by the rules in force.
  • Remember that overshooting, leaving one, or an invalid final dart can bust a visit.
